Group stages and knockout – a practical guide
Plan progression from groups to playoffs before reporting the first result. Clear advancement rules reduce uncertainty when group matches are complete.
A checkpoint before playoffs
Review every group result and standing. Apply the announced tie-break order and check which entries advance to each playoff level. Do not change tie-break rules to favor a particular entry.
From groups to a final
Choose the number of groups and which positions advance. Different playoff levels, such as A, B and C, can be assigned to positions that should continue playing.
An example with eight teams
Two groups of four have six matches per group. Advancing two teams from each group gives four playoff teams: two semifinals and a final. A standalone eight-team single-elimination bracket needs seven matches to determine a winner.
Scores and tie-breaks
Report results and review group standings before advancing. Tie-break order is configurable. Use consistent rules across groups and announce them before the first match.
